Mercy

Would someone please tell me what I do to close comments on posts older than a week? I'm getting very, very tired of all the spamming.

Well, either you go through every single post and close it, or there are a couple of plugins you can use. Here is one I have not used, and it only works if your blog database is a mysql database. I use this plugin, which needs the blog to be set up to be php ready. That means all of your files have to end in ".php" instead of ".html," and you can set that in your configuration menu.

Here is another one. I found it by Googling so I don't know how it works.

Another way to stop spammers is to install MT-Blacklist. I had it installed on my MT blogs but something got screwed up (I think the guy upgraded it for the 3.0 version of MT and mt MT blogs still use the free 2.66 version) so I uninstalled it. Since you are on mu.nu you might want to ask whoever runs that domain if there is something they can set up for you. In fact, they will probably have to install the plugins, unless they've given you server access.

It's one of the projects that Pixy is looking into. Our comments are set up with a common source so if we use an automatic comment closer it'll be the same for all Munu blogs. I've heard mention of a script that you can run manually to close all comments with certain criteria but the instructions frightened me and now when I try to think of the name my brain cringes in the deep recesses of my skull and refuses to provide it.

Stupid brain.

I forgot to put in the plugin that I said I used -- I got it from Geeksblog.com but I can't seem to find it.

mt closecomments. I'll email it to you.

I installed... One of them, can't remember which. Only problem was it gave all our users access to all the blogs, which wasn't really ideal.

On the other hand, I do have such a plugin installed in MT3, if you're interested in playing guinea-pig.

I use the mtclosecomments. Be sure to go to the parent web site on the link above. It actually has a link to the zip file you will need for this plugin to work. It also allows you to go back to those posts that you wish to reopen for comments. I have all of those listed under a catagory that I can find very easy. When I go on vacation as I am next week, I will get normally 700 - 800 spam comments. This works great. I have noticed that for the most part it is always the same posts that draw the spam comments. I also run mt-blacklist. This combination works well. Both are easy to install and maintain. Good luck. Spam has almost caused me to stop blogging as I can spend hours removing these scum from my site.
