I Know Me Some American Sunbelt

Why I don't care too much about the Euro-sneer that most Americans ooh, don't even have passports:

(Create your own visited states map.)

Because I've been a U.S. citizen now for 36 years and look how much of that map I've still got blank. Embarrassing!

Incidentally, I don't know most people fill these in but in my case, I marked it visited if I'd spent at least a night there, and left it blank otherwise. I've been through Michigan a dozen times if I've been through it once, for example, but having never lingered there, I didn't feel right counting it.

My criterion was either spend the night, or spend some appreciable amount of money (which is to say, more than, say, a mere tankful of gas).

I've filled in 44 states by now, but I'm pretty sure that when I was your age, my map wasn't any redder than yours.

Awww, I would have counted driving through it.

Anyway. Who cares if we don't have passports? Stupid Eurotards. I've been to Europe, Turkey, Iraq (without a passport--in the military) and after having been to all of the above, I feel no need to get a passport. There's nothing in any of those places for which I'd care to go back. Really, Americans DO have everything worth spending money to see, right here within our own borders. Euros are just envious (as usual).

There have been a few times in the past few years, when I had some time off and some money to burn, I probably could have spent a few weeks in Europe. The first time this happened, I was on the east coast of the US and decided to visit the Maritime provinces. The second time, I was right near the Gulf Islands and decided to make a project of visiting all of the major ones. And I'm racking up air miles from business travel, and I am planning to use my first opportunity to fly to Iqaluit.

Is there a nice application that allows you to make your own visited states-type maps? I want to make a Visited Gulf Islands map, just because I'd get a kick out of having filled in 13 of them while nearly everyone else would have nothing.

MS, I'd try poking around further at that site, particularly here. It appears the author will work with interested parties to modify and hack these little gadgets.
